Notes from Cabos

By Bob Soltis, winner 2006 iSatori/Real SOLUTIONS Best Body Contest

"...winning the contest is something I never expected. It's a real honor."

I've just returned home from my trip to Cabos, complements of iSatori and Real SOLUTIONS. I'm still humbled by winning this contest and receiving this prize. When I entered the contest, I had no idea I would even come close to winning. I just did my best. I worked out with a great deal of intensity and tried to follow a good nutrition plan every day. I followed Stephen's program right to the T. And I don't think I could have enjoyed this type of success following someone else's program. I just hope I can continue to do this for many years to come.

But winning the contest is something I never expected. It's a real honor. I'm just so humbled that I was selected. I thank iSatori and Stephen for making this possible for me.

Day 1

Before we even left the airport for our trip to Cabos, we experienced a little excitement! Everybody boarded the plane in Phoenix, and five minutes before our take off, the pilot made an announcement that there was an electrical outage at the airport in Cabos San Lucas, and they had no communication with the airport. So he asked everyone to deplane and just hang around the terminal while the problem was corrected.

So everyone got off the plane, and we sat around the terminal, and fortunately, the problem was corrected in about 45 minutes. But after we got back on the plane, there was a delay in the plane taking off, so we had to just sit and wait for another 45 minutes.

Fortunately, from that point on, everything went just as smooth as silk.

Once we landed in Cabos, we got our luggage and went out to the shuttle area, and lo and behold, there was a shuttle driver with a big sign with my name on it. The shuttle driver escorted us to his van, loaded up our luggage, and drove us back to the resort. On the short drive to the resort, we enjoyed checking out the numerous resorts, amazing golf courses, and the ocean, of course.

After we checked in, we walked around the resort and looked at everything and were just amazed at how beautiful it was. It's situated right there on the ocean. And the landscaping, the palm trees, the bushes were so meticulously taken care of.

When we finally got to our room, there was a large bottle of Champaign on ice with a fruit basket. And the room! I figured we'd get a small hotel room—but it was like a condo. The bedroom was huge! Along with a shower and a Jacuzzi bathtub. There was a large living room with one of these huge plasma TV's, and right off the living room was a small kitchen area. We were on the fourth floor, and from the balcony, we could pretty much see the entire resort as well as the swimming pool and the ocean with the huge waves crashing up against the shoreline.

It was probably about 5:00 p.m. when we got settled into the room. So we got ready and went down to have dinner by the swimming pool around 7:00 p.m., when the sun was setting. They had these big torches outside, and the sunset was gorgeous. Again, watching these huge, huge waves crashing up against the shoreline was really incredible.

Day 2

We got up and headed to the fitness center and worked out first before breakfast. The fitness center had just about anything anyone needed to get a great workout.

Then it was time to eat. They served a breakfast buffet every morning, and the buffet had every kind of food anyone could ever ask for. And the food was delicious.

That day we decided to just hang around the swimming pool, sit in the Jacuzzi, and meet people. We just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves.

Day 3

The next day, we went into the town of Cabos San Lucas, and we walked around the town and visited the shops.

There's a big marina right there in town, and I love boats. In fact, when I lived back in Illinois, I had a 36-foot Catalina sailboat on Lake Michigan, and I sailed for eight years. So it was really neat to walk around the marina and see all the boats and the powerboats and sailboats.

We had lunch there and early in the evening, we went to three of the most popular nightclubs there. The Cabo Wabo, which is owned by Sammy Hagar; the El Squid Roe night club; and the Giggling Marlin. All of them were fun places to visit.

Then we headed back to the resort. And since it was our last evening there, we had a candlelit lobster dinner in their famous restaurant.

I've been to Cabos before, and it's one of my favorite places to go in Mexico. It was just a lot of fun. And, at somebody else's expense! How could not enjoy something like that? It was a very expensive trip for the company, I know. But we certainly enjoyed it and had a great time.

Back at Home

My program's continuing to go well. I go to the gym first thing in the morning.

"I'm 70 years old, and I feel like I'm only 30. Right now, I have more muscle and less bodyfat than I did 50 years ago when I was playing football in college."

I'm 70 years old, and I feel like I'm only 30. Right now, I have more muscle and less bodyfat than I did 50 years ago when I was playing football in college. And that's no lie. Because when I was in high school and college, we never had weights. And nobody taught me anything about nutrition. And it's amazing that I have more muscle and less bodyfat than when I was in college. I was a running back, and I weighed 170 lbs. Right now, I've put on some more muscle since I finished the contest, so I weigh 190 lbs. That's 20 lbs more than I weighed when I was an athlete in college, and yet, I'm not fat.

I still don't feel that I've reached my full genetic potential. I have a little bit of a spare tire that I've got to get rid of. And I'm working on it. I just want to maintain this for the rest of my life, and I'm sure I will because I feel so darn good!
