Even though the only supplements that I am taking during Project MAS are protein and Meta-Cel, I had a quick question regarding taking supplements together.  Before I started the program, I had been getting pretty good results from taking Acetyl L-Carnitine, Phosphatidylserine, and glutamine.  And I plan to add these back into my regimen after the four weeks are up.  The question is, I have done a good amount of personal study on supplementation and found it pretty widely accepted that mixing supplements and taking many at once is not a good idea.  It is argued that it diminishes the effectivness because they are all competing for absorption in the body.  With so many supplements needing to be taken POST workout, is it, in the administrations opinion, OK to take several at once?  Is there some kind of dosing schedule you guys could recommend?  Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

In terms of absorption, especially amino acids, things are typically absorbed by their molecular weight.  The heavy it is, the more likely it will be absorbed over a nutrient with less weight.  Usually the absorption rate of most nutrients is already pretty low (without something added to help absorption), so it's important to strategize your intakes.  Glutamine has an extremely low molecular weight, so it's best taken on its own (not with other aminos) or taken with something to accelerate absorption.

Thanks for your response, Chris!  You mentioned taking something with a supplement to increase absorption.  What would be an example of something that could do that?  Just wondering

silly question maybe, but how does one go about mixing Isatori supplements together in relation to maximum absorption and caffeine quantities in a daily dose?

(a handy chart would be great)

And Chris Ball's words of wisdom rise again from the dust of ancient posts.  I've just been mixing my glutamine in with my pre-workout shake.  So would it be better to take it on its own?

And, Sourgrapes, that is an interesting request.  With all the caffeine in the various supps and drinks many take, I'm sure some are really getting high.

    Great Question Buffstuff,

That same question has been going through my mind lately as to the mixing of supplements.  Any advice for sheduling various supplements would benefit me also.

Buffstuff asked his question 5 years ago.  I doubt he'll check back for an answer.  But DJFitness, you are here NOW and want some help.  I'm no chemist, nor do I know all the ins and outs of supplements, but here's what I base my supplementation on.

    1)  Some supps are as close to food as a chemical can get, so they don't have too many restrictions--vitamins and oil capsules, for example.  I take them with my meals.

    2) Almost as close to food are whey protein, glutamine, and BCAAs.  I take those in shakes together.  Looking at the ingredients for many MRPs, those same supps are mixed, so if it's not good, then MANY nutrition experts are wrong.

    3) Meta-CEL, 3XL, H+ and Morph all claim a special "delivery" system.  So if I trust iSatori, I figure that they get where they are supposed to be if I follow the directions.  In fact, the claim is made that other supps taken with them will also benefit from the "delivery."

    So here's my plan:

Wake up and take 4 ISA-test, multi-vitamin, 2 fish oil capsules and some required meds.

    Get ready for the gym.

Drink pre-workout shake with H+, glutamine and BCAAs

During workout, drinking another shake--protein, simple carb, glutamine, and BCAAs

Finish workout and take Meta-CEL or 3XL

2 more fish oil capsules with noon and evening meals

Bedtime, if I'm using Meta-CEL, another dose of it.

Sunday's my only non-workout day, so even if the workout is cardio I follow the same plan.  On Sunday's I just take the evening Meta-CEL and move the ISA-Test to then too.  I don't take H+ on Sunday.

Hope that helps a little.  Others who use different combinations of supps can surely chime in with their advice or experiences on the subject.

    Hey Kristen my fellow Michigander,

You look Fantastic! and I bet you feel great! I am doing alright. I have fallen off the fitness wagon, due to all the stress of losing my job (Twice in 14 months) and wondering what I was going to do next. It all started back in April 2006, I lost my job with General Motors, after 61/2 years of direct service as an Electrical Engineer. I was down to 216 Lbs. and feeling Great! until that happened and then I returned back to 230 Lbs. and feeling lousy due to all of the stress.

Two months later, in June 2006, I started a direct position as an Electrical Engineer with Hella Electronics in Plymouth, MI and I began to get back into shape dropping down to 216 Lbs. once again and then it ended once again, a year later,  June 2007. When I lost my job again and was given 2 weeks severance pay and once again the stress had me gaining weight once again. I got lucky though and found a new position three weeks later in Troy, MI where I started July 2, 2007 as a HW Validation Engineer in the development of Lithium Ion Battery Packs for the Automotive Industry, and I returned back to 230 Lbs. and approx. 30% BF by November 2007.

As of the new year I made the resolution to get serious about my fitness again and to date, I have dropped 10 Lbs. since January 1, 2008, which is down to 220 Lbs. once again, and I am beggining to feel much better once again.  I pray that all this loss of jobs crap comes to an end in Michigan.  All it does is screw up everyone's life.

My fitness goals are to get down to 170 Lbs. and 17% BF by July 2008.  So I don't know if there is a way to do it, but I am trying my darndest. Skinny is my idle.  Everytime I see his pictures, I wish I could look like him.

So I will see everyone out here more and keep everyone up on my progress.  It's great to be back at it.

    See you around,

    DJ

    Hey DJ!

I am so sorry to hear about your jobs and all that you have been through and what tough blow that was for you, not once but twice!!!!  Plymouth is practically in my back yard......small world isn't it.  I am very, very happy to hear that you have landed back on your feet and have been at your new job for 8 months and I'm sure you are settling in with all the newness surrounding that.

I am very glad to hear that you have your goals set for this year and have already dropped 10lbs! WOHOOOOOOO!!!!  DJ, you don't have to wish for anything.............you can make it happen!  You have to surround yourself with motivational people who are going to inspire and help keep you going and on track.  Take a few guesses at who those people are...........  I certainly hope to see you around the board more often!!!

Thanks for the compliments...................that avatar is from 2005 at my leanest and I put it up after Christmas to help me get my focus back.  So far so good!  Yes, I do feel GREAT from a physical standpoint.

Exercise is a huge STRESS buster DJ......................instead of turning to food, turn to the weights and the ole treadmill!  Talk about feeling good!

    All the best to you!

    Hi DJ

Glad to see you back on here.  I am sorry to hear about your job.  Things are rough here in Georgia as well.  Home Depot just laid off 500 employees at their office here in Georgia.  The economy is certainly having it's effect everywhere and gas prices aren't helping the situation either.  Anyway, glad to hear you are back at it with your fitness quest and congratulations on your success acheived thus far.  I'm sure your job situation will change soon and for the better.

Hearing about all your bad luck and how you've bounced back from it all makes you MY idol, DJ.  There are more important battles than the one with the scales.  You've fought and won some pretty big ones in the last year and a half.

I'm glad that those war fronts have stabalized enough that you can get back to your health goals, though.  It took me from Feb, 2001 to Dec. 2001 to make the change from 200 pounds to 145.  You can do it in 2008!  I'll cheer you on every step of the way.

    Your Kidding me Skinny,

You dropped 55 Lbs. in 11 Months?  That's 5.5 Lbs. per Month.  Is that Healthy?  All the experts say that it isn't healthy to lose more than 2 Lbs. per week. How exactly did you do it?  Did you take Supplements? If so, what? and what sort of a diet did you go on? I would love to see myself drop 5.5 Lbs. per month and have a toned body like yours.

Thanks for the inspirational news, Skinny. I'm going to go for it!  I will come to you for advice when needed then.

    Thanks!

I exaggerate--I started at 197.  I didn't EVER want to see me hit that 200 on the scales, but on my thin bones that 197 LOOKED like a normal guy's 250.  At first, when there is lots of fat to lose, 3 or 4 pounds a week could still be normal.  Then it should slow down to 2 to 3 a week.  At the end, when I got close to my goal, I was lucky to hit 1 or 2, but by then I was not pushing so much for weight loss as I was for muscle gain.  And that's been the story ever since.  My body fat at 145 was about 10%.  Now I'm 162 at 8%.  THAT'S been the slow progress--getting the muscle mass.

That first 11 months I did BforL to the letter.  For supps I only did a simple creatine (to satisfy the BforL Challenge) and protein shakes.

When Meta-CEL came out in 2003 with the Max.Growth program, I jumped on that and started my long life on this board and with iSatori products.
It's exciting to hear your enthusiasm.  It will take some DEEP inner conviction to stay the course, but when things get tough, we'll be here to keep you going.
