Hey all,

It has been a while since we have visited on this subject. I wanted to get some of your opinions on what you all do with your kids or grandkids to encourage them to be healthy and active.

I myself have a seven year old daughter and I know that with the busy lifestyle that we all have it is a challange to keep them eating properly and exercising properly. I know myself I do all my ab workouts at home 3 days a week and she is always more than happy to do them with me. That is one of my favorite times to spend with her. Weekends alway consist of riding bikes and taking walks with the family dog.

Keeping our nutrition on track is really easy during the week with the set schedule, the weekends are a little tougher of course. We always make the effort to take good food and water with us when out but it is tough. The meals on the weekend are always the hardest!

Any thoughts from any of you? What do you all do with your kids to keep them fit and healthy?

Mathias

While I don't have any children, I find that it all starts with the parents.  I deal with the general population on a daily basis and the one thing I have the biggest struggle with is getting my clients to change the way they eat and think about food.

A child's sense of reality which shapes them as they get older stems from people of authority (parents, teachers, clergy, coaches, etc.) who are all adults.  The kids are fed junk in school.  There are vending machines in the schools.  All too often I have friends who are parents who sheepishly tell me all the time that they ate The Golden Arches because it's easier, more convenient and their kids were crying for it.

As for you, it's no different than what I preach to my clients all the time.  You need to be pro-active about your diet and if you plan ahead and carry around a small cooler when you are on the go, you will find that it is easy to stick to eating clean.  However, if you do have to do the takout thing, I recommend Chipolte's or Moe's.  You can get away fairly healthy in there.  Also, when in doubt, you can never go wrong with a grilled chicken sandwhich however, regardless of where you go, you will encounter the ridiculously high sodium levels in restaurant and take out food.

All in all, from reading your post, you are doing a great job.

We went to babysit at my son's house a while back.  As my son and daughter-in-law were getting ready to leave on their evening out, the mother said, "'The kids might want a snack.  There's humus in the fridge or they might like some edamame."  That's sure a far cry from chips and dip or candy.  It's all from what they have been exposed to.

When I visited my grandkids in England this last August, I exercised every day.  I asked the 2 older kids (9 and 7) if either of them wanted to go for a run.  The 7-year-old took me up on it the first day;  they both did the 2nd day; and the third day the 9-year-old girl went.  They enjoyed it a lot.  Since I've been home, they've kept it up, setting up their own exercise schedule with push-ups and other calesthenics and running with their parents.

I think all kids need is a good example and a fun way to implement a good nutrition and exercise plan that is part of their overall lifestyle.

Hi everyone!!!

I think it is great Skinny in that your grandkids went out for a run with you and they are still doing it today.  As for my kids, when I ask them they look at me like I'm from Mars and say "Uh, NO THANK YOU".    Now, those of you that know me know that I love to run and and for awhile there I was running quite a bit while training for my marathon.  Maybe it was the 8 and 10 mile runs that turned them off hey?

Now, on the other hand, my oldest son is very active in sports and works out at the high school even in the off season for baseball and he sometimes works out at home in our basement gym, he definately goes for the weights over the treadmill!  The youngest is active too, not as much as his brother, but he is my label reader , always worried about how much cholesterol is in foods, and the one that orders chicken caesar salads as a meal when we go out to eat. He also has been known to ask for green beans at a friends house.   At night for snacks, they both ask for fruit plates.  I keep an abundance of fresh fruit in my fridge, so it is always on hand.

On my other hand, my pantry does contain chips, cookies, pre-packaged foods...........they like occassional candy bars, and a trip to Wendy's etc..  I believe the key is setting a good example for your kids both in the exercise arena as well as the nutritional arena, but once in while and all in moderation it is okay to have something sweet and salty!   Sometimes you just gotta!!!!

Have a wonderful day!!!!
