What’s the secret, you ask?

Ok, Here it is…

It's the magical, powerful “exercise” of goal setting.  Now wait! Before you say to yourself, “Oh, not this hokey stuff”… please consider these interesting facts for a moment:

--> People who set goals are TEN times more likely to achieve more in life, than those who do not. (Yes, this is proven by scientific studies).

--> People who set financial and professional goals earn, on average, 80% MORE than those who do not.

--> People who set physical goals (such as weight loss or muscular gain), are 400% more likely to achieve them, than those who do not.

Generally speaking, I think it’s safe to say that those who set goals are more successful in life than those who do not.

So, why not perform this simple, but powerful exercise?

Well, for some people, it’s likely a fear of failure. For others it’s a daunting task.  Or, for some, it may be a fear of change.

In either case, if you want something in your life to change, or you want to achieve MORE in some area of your life, then you have to DO something about it.

And the simplest, and easiest way I’ve found is to set goals.

For those who know me, this is an “exercise” that I perform -- and encourage others to do the same with me -- every year.

It’s always worked marvelously well for me, and for thousands of others. And I am absolutely, positively certain the exercise of goal-setting can do the same for you too!

So, I’d like to share with you a goal-setting exercise – to make it quite simple to perform. I’d like also like to share my goals with you, too. And, as in year's past, it’s important to me to know what your goals are.

Here’s how it works…

Simply, ask yourself this question:

"If you and I were talking on the phone, or sitting together in person ONE YEAR FROM TODAY... What, specifically (think personally, professionally, and spiritually) would have had to have happened for you to feel happy with your progress?"

Every year, I'm amazed by what this very simple, yet astonishingly powerful question can do. The extraordinary dividends it yields.

And every year, I'm inspired to build on what I accomplished the previous year. So every year just keeps getting better and better! I have so much to be thankful for.

So, let's get started on your goal setting for 2009. Remember, if you're having a difficult time thinking, articulating, or writing out your goals... Try asking yourself the opening question of my message (above). This is a great mental exercise that has always worked well for me. And, I'm sure, if you use it, can work wonders for you too.

In case you're curious, here are My Goals for 2009:

1) Sell 1,000,000 boxes of Voots, our new healthy fruit and vegetable supplement for kids.
(I am a big believer that in order to the change the trajectory of children’s body image/health/obesity, we need to become more involved in their eating habits and lifestyle changes we influence upon them. This is a great start!)

2) Write and Publish a new, really really unique book on physical transformation. (I have an idea that I believe is really going to knock people’s socks off, and make the process of weight loss/muscle gain quite fun, yet effective!)

3) Read 12 books (one every month), each with a different perspective on various religions that exist. (I want to learn more about other religions, simply out of curiosity.)

4) Raise, and Donate at least $20,000 to a new non-profit organization that, after meeting and getting to know the owners personally, hearing them talk about their mission, and seeing firsthand what they’ve accomplished, have become a big fan of: http://www.vitaminangels.com/

5) Help my girls (all three of them!), learn to excel in their physical fitness, in order to win their National Cheerleading championships (they won this past year, and I want to encourage them to retain their title by investing time in their training!)

Now, if you would, share with me what your goals for 2009 are!

Good stuff Stephen!  And thanks for the reminder.  In some of the consulting work that I do, we help employees with goal setting, but sadly enough it's something that I typically don't do a very good job of myself.  2009 will be different though.  So here's my top 6 for the year...

1) Continue to build the membership base at my gym and hit my breakeven goal in the next 6 months.  It's been somewhat of a slow road in getting gym #1 up and running, but we have grown every single and I expect to continue the trend into 2009.

2) By the end of 2009, I want to have gym #2 open and operating.  This is heavily dependent on goal #1 above...which gives me even more incentive.

3) I will gain 10+ pounds of muscle in the next 3 months and then trim up to sub 10% body fat by July.  I will be in better shape on my 33rd birthday than I was on 23rd birthday .

4) I liked your idea on reading, so my goal is to read 4 books on Leadership by the end of the year.

5) This one is a little hard to make measurable, but I have a goal of continued support for my wife during this 2nd pregnancy.  This will involve encouragment as she maintains her fitness levels, as well as doing extra things around the house to make things easier for her.

6) Lastly, I have a goal to help my daughter learn to ride her new bike and learn to swing her first set of plastic golf clubs.  I'm really looking forward to watching her develop this year...should be fun!  By the way, she loves her Voots!

All the best,

Matt

Great post Stephen and glad to see you on here to kick off 2009.  As you know, I am a true believer in the Laws of Attraction and setting physical goals to either improve or maintain your overall health, fitness and wellness is certainly the foundation toward creating the life you want.

I have so many goals personally and professionally.

On the physical side, I am a continuing work in process and each year brings a new transformation.  I will be celbrating my 45th Birthday this year and at the age of 45, although I am in great shape, I guess you can say I will continue building my best body.

Professionally, my intention is to write an e-book.  It is something that "The Universe" keeps calling to me and to continue building my business through multi-media.

Be more consistent writing articles/blogs.

As a person and fitness professional, to continue to inspire and motive those I come in contact with and to help others keep a positive mindset.

2008 was a Year of Gratitude for me and I will continue to be Thankful and Grateful for all the wonderful opportunities that happen and all the people who are currently in my life and enter my life personally and professionally.

Here's to a year of living abundantly financially, relationally, mentally, physically and spiritually.

This is a good post as setting goals hopefully realistic and obtainable are very worthwhile in all facets of life.

Turning 60 last summer was a great reminder and kick in the butt that life can be short so one has to take advantage of all it has to offer and unless you are physically and mentally in condition to undertake challenges the path is going to be a lot more difficult. So my first goal is:

-to continue my physical workouts and conditioning  and to increase the intensity in order not to regress as I still know I can add even more lean mass to this old body

-set an example and encourage others to get involved in physical activity and conditioning

-keep ongoing education and career comittment  an integral part of my life to enhance my earning capability as retirement is closing in in a few years

-be very supportive to my family and encourage my son and daughter to quit smoking (they're trying)

-I'd also like to slow down a bit and take more time off from work and start to enjoy spending quality time with family and friends

 you know the saying...........

Gotta luv it....

Hi Steve,

Here are my personal goals, and thanks for caring:

1.  I have custody of my 3 children, since their mother walked out on us a few years ago.  I want to be a better dad; we all should never stop trying to achieve that.

2.  I am 52 years old.  I want to gain another 10 pounds of muscle.

3.  I want to earn enough so I can buy a decent car for us; one that don't keep breaking down and be able to purchase some supplements for me.  (It seems all of my earnings go for the kids, which they should).

Thanks you for taking the time to read these.

Sincerely,

Lee McClelland

How exciting -- I am a new member and this is my first post!

My goal for 2009 is to re-establish fitness and healthy eating back into my life consistently.

I have a 3 year old and a 2 year old and have kind of given up on myself for about 3.5 years, but I really feel like 2009 is the year!!  Prior to about 3 1/2 years ago, I ran half-marathons, rode century bike-rides and was constantly in the gym and eating really clean...

Since the kids, it's been impossible (mostly emotionally) to keep up with it.  Up until I signed up for this year's 911 Ultimate Transformation Challenge on January 5, 2009, I basically ate what the kids ate (pizza, mac and cheese, hot dogs, etc....).  Even though it's been only a month since the beginning, I already feel like I'm a stronger person both physically and emotionally.

I really believe that I can transform my body and my life around with the motivation that this challenge is giving me!  I am excited to see the end results, Thank you iSatori and Real Solutions!!!!

By the way, I was 137 pounds at the start at 5'6".  The bodyfat measured 36%!!! Holy cow!!!   I have lost 4 pounds to date, but my clothes are really beginning to be loose around the waist and theighs area.....  Any tips on fat loss would be helpful, I don't really need to lose too many more pounds.  I am taking Curvelle, MXLS7, working out 5 days per week and eating every three hours...

Thank you for the opportunity to take charge of myself and be healthy again!

Hi there KCB and Welcome!  I agree with Skinny.......give it thought about starting a journal right here on the board.  It will help to keep you motivated and accountable!  Plus, you get to see our smiling faces more often.   I  agree with you in that you really don't have to worry too much about the pounds lost and focus on building some muscle which is going to give you that sculpted, toned look and is really going to start chipping away at that body fat.    The more muscle you build the more calories you'll burn and your metabolism will really start churning and burning!  What type of workouts are you doing?  Any plan that incorporates strength training and cardio is a win in my book! Please keep us posted and WELCOME!!!!
